My Story

I grew up as the oldest daughter who was always academically responsible and loved school. As I got into high school and college, I had an abundance of studying strategies and tricks for every subject that helped me become extremely successful. However, in talking with my peers, I realized not everyone just "knew" these tricks. Naturally, as a good friend, I taught them my tricks to try to help. "This makes so much sense!", "Why doesn't my math teacher teach it this way?", "Why don't you become a teacher?" they said. The thought had genuinely never crossed my mind but with the rush of satisfaction and happiness I got from helping my friends understand difficult subjects made me begin to consider it. At 17, after graduating early, I began tutoring as a way to earn extra cash. I only had two students, a high schooler and a military hopeful. This was the most intense trial-by-fire I had ever experienced.

The high schooler, Jane (changed name for privacy), was struggling with the demands of high school. Her grades had spiraled out of control and her assignments had piled up. Her mom, reasonably frustrated, started reaching out to find a tutor to help her in math, her more difficult subject. That's how I came into the story. Recently graduated, I was very familiar with all the teachers and policies and gradebook functions. After a couple sessions, it was clear she needed more help than just with math. Out of sympathy for her situation and a growing investment in her education, I dove all in. I worked with her to manage all her classes, assignments, and grades. She quickly got back on her feet and started to progress. I was there several times a week for hours at a time, just trying to help. She finished the school year with amazing grades and a new found confidence that enabled her to be successful in graduating.

My military hopeful, Clay (changed name for privacy), was dead set on joining the Army. It was all he wanted. However, his ASVAB test scores were his #1 enemy. He couldn't get above maybe a 15. The math made no sense and the reading even less. Even though he had dyslexia and a learning disability, Clay didn't let that stop him. He found me and we started studying. I had never even heard of the ASVAB or an AFQT score before. I spent a week studying all the information I could find about this test, making diagnostic tests to properly gauge his abilities, practice worksheets, anything he needed. We were starting from zero: learning how to multiply, divide, add and subtract fractions. Slowly, Clay became more confident and advanced in his topics. We had several setbacks of some more failed tests, but his score improved each time. Finally, I received a text. "I passed". It was bittersweet. While I was extremely happy and proud of Clay for all he had achieved, I was sad to lose my hardest working student ever.

It was then I knew that I had found my niche. I loved one on one tutoring. No pressure to teach to a whole class, just the student, 100% attention. However, the world had other plans. March 2020, COVID came and all the libraries shut down; my main tutoring location. I didn't have any of the equipment to conduct virtual lessons and neither did my students. I unfortunately had to suspend my tutoring for an unknown period of time. I was disheartened but I knew that one day, I would be able to keep tutoring.
